National Nonprofit Kicks Off Year-Round Initiative to Aid Millions of Americans

Souper Bowl of Caring supercharges 2018 efforts to aid Central Texas Food Bank.

Austin – National nonprofit Souper Bowl of Caring (SBOC) is kicking off its year-round initiative towards tackling hunger to help the more than 4 million Texans who face hunger.

Teaming up with long-standing partners the Central Texas Food Bank, H-E-B, Central Market and Randalls, SBOC held its annual Austin kickoff at the food bank on January 5th. Youth volunteers, community organizations, local schools and media partners joined in to spread the message and honor the mission of SBOC during the event as well.

Texans can join the movement to tackle hunger by teaming up with SBOC to host their own food drive. 100 percent of the donations from food drives will go to a local charity. Interested individuals are also invited to donate at the register or purchase pre-packaged bags of food available at H-E-B, Central Market or Randalls between now and the Super Bowl, all of which will benefit Central Texans in need served by the Central Texas Food Bank.

“Hunger is an issue 365 days a year, and it is thanks to our partners and volunteers that we are able to tackle hunger year round,” said Souper Bowl of Caring Board Chair, Dr. Judith Craven. “Since its inception, SBOC has evolved into a national front to join communities, inspire youth, and feed the 1 in 7 Americans who struggle every day to find their next meal.”

SBOC started as a grassroots movement 27 years ago with a mission of generating food and resources for charities and organizations that feed hungry people. To date, SBOC has generated more than $135 million from donors overall for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country. Last year, SBOC raised more than 2.5 million meals for hungry Central Texans. This year’s goal is 3 million meals.

“We are proud to team up with an organization that mobilizes the community to tackle hunger,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO of the Central Texas Food Bank. “Last year we distributed nearly 38 million meals. It’s only with the help of events like SBOC, our volunteers and generous Texans that we’re able to make such a positive difference in the community.” For more information on volunteering, hosting a food drive or making a donation, visit souperbowl.org.
