When food is an experience, even at a Mobile Pantry

Aug24

On an early Tuesday in Mart, Texas, Myrna wonders if her four year old will be tempted to eat one of the fresh fruits and vegetables piled high on long tables before they get home.  For Thad, food is very much an experience, especially at the mobile food pantry.

“Walking down the line has become he loves to do and something I love to see him do,” Myrna said.

Together, they prepare for the sweltering heat of a typical Central Texas summer so the family can have nourishing food at home.  It’s bonding moment she would prefer to do without. Day care is an expensive option for her family, and one they cannot currently afford. While her husband works, she stays home to take care of Thad.

“If I could get a job to help my husband, I would do it in a heartbeat,” Myrna said. “But it’s not about what I want, but what’s best for our family.”

Myrna faces challenges many households face in the summer months.  The food she receives from the Capital Area Food Bank’s mobile pantry helps to offset the increased utility bills and allows her to save some money.

Thad takes a big bite out of a fresh honey crisp apple.  Some treats are too good to wait.
