We Need Your Help to Ensure that Families have Access to SNAP

Apr25

We need your help! The U.S. House Committee on Agriculture has put forward a Farm Bill that, if passed, stands to hurt many in our Central Texas community by cutting the SNAP program, thereby limiting access to food.

SNAP puts food into the hands of nearly 4 million Texans, more than half of them under the age of 18 or older than 65. Making cuts to this program is simply cruel – and will leave our fellow Texans struggling to find their next meal.Just to provide some perspective, for every one of the 38 million meals that Central Texas Food Bank provided last year, SNAP provided 12. Losing SNAP, or food stamps, will make it harder for thousands of Central Texas families to make ends meet. If this happens, Central Texas Food Bank will experience the impact of this increased need and will not be able to fully fill the gap.

Most SNAP recipients are children, elderly, and people with disabilities. Among SNAP recipients who can work, most do work—often at low wages that cannot meet the rising cost of living in our region. This Farm Bill greatly ignores the complex challenges faced by low-wage workers and imposes severe new sanctions that will make it harder for these folks to get food and reach their full potential.
