On Dec. 16, 2013, Crenshaw Athletic Club after school program students hosted their second annual Fun Run Fundraiser. In its first year, students from kindergarten to fifth grade joined together and raised $3,500 by taking pledges for each lap they ran. In 2013, the event was an even bigger success. The 84 students ran a combined 1,700 laps on a quarter mile track, which is a staggering 400 miles. Fifth-graders averaged over four miles each, with some runners doing as many as eight miles, and one ambitious student running 38 laps alone. At the end of the run, the Crenshaw Athletic Club students raised $6,000 for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas in just one hour.

The students say they wanted to find a way for children to help other children, and we hope they know what a huge difference they’re making! More children are at risk of hunger in Austin than in prior years, with 15 percent of children living families with incomes in extreme poverty - $11,746 a year or less for a family of four. Research shows that it takes $66,812 for a family of four to live comfortably in Austin. The Crenshaw Athletic Club’s donation to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas will provide 15,000 meals to their neighbors in need, and help us serve more than 20,000 children every week.

We were thrilled to meet these generous kids when they came to tour the Food Bank and drop off their donation, and we can’t wait to see how big they go in 2014!
