Souper Bowl of Caring Sets New Record with 2.9 Million Meals Raised

Feb15

Each year, our community continues to amaze us during Souper Bowl of Caring, and this year is no different. Thanks to our wonderful community, H-E-B, Randalls and Central Market, the annual food drive set a new record with 2.9 million meals raised.

Students from St. Edwards University, Linder Elementary, Fulmore Middle School, Veritas Academy and more gathered at the Central Texas Food Bank on January 6 to kick off Souper Bowl of Caring with a goal of raising 2.75 million meals in the month leading up to the Big Game.  The event uses the energy of the Big Game to mobilize youth and the community in a united effort to raise meals for families facing hunger.

With one in six Central Texans at risk of hunger, the new record shows the commitment of our neighbors and our partners to tackle hunger and help families in need by surpassing the goal by 150,000 meals.

Thanks to H-E-B, Randalls and Central Market, families could easily participate in the food drive by picking up a pre-packaged bag of nutritious food or making a monetary donation at the register.

“For H-E-B at its core, hunger relief is always number one. We know about food. We sell food and so for us, it’s really important that people are being fed,” H-E-B Public Affairs Manager Leticia Mendoza said. “Souper Bowl of Caring is just one of the many campaigns that we participate in to help bring not only awareness to the community, but also do our part to help the food banks.”

Though the Souper Bowl of Caring tackles hunger in Central Texas, the annual food drive is a nationwide effort that benefits those struggling with hunger all over the United States. This year, the organization has collected more than $7 million in cash and food items for charities across the country.

We can’t thank our incredible community, H-E-B, Central Market and Randalls enough for helping stock the Food Bank’s shelves. Families across Central Texas couldn’t be happier to receive a nutritious meal thanks to you.

With the donations arriving, we still need your help to distribute the food to families’ tables.  Thanks to everyone’s efforts, all the healthy meals will be distributed to families in need through the Food Bank’s network of nearly 250 Partner Agencies in our 21 county service area. With the record-breaking number of meals coming into our warehouse, now more than ever, we need volunteers to help us sort all the donations. Sign up to volunteer now!
