Souper Bowl of Caring 2016 Breaks Record in Central Texas

Feb04

This year, we tackled hunger and made Souper Bowl of Caring history. Not only have we reached the goal of 1.6 million meals and counting, thanks to H-E-B, Randalls, Central Market and our wonderful community, we have raised the most meals ever!

“We’re excited to be able to go back to our HEB customers and say, thanks to their generosity we were not only able to meet that aggressive goal of 1.6 million meals but the numbers are still coming in from all the different agencies...and that’s really exciting," Public Affairs Manager Leticia Mendoza said.

This new record shows us the power our community has to make an impact in the lives of families in need.  The event uses the energy of the Big Game to mobilize youth in a united effort to raise meals for their hungry neighbors.  With a kick off on Jan. 8 and the event ending on Feb. 7, the day of the Big Game, during the one month collection period, 175 different groups from schools, congregations, and businesses registered to hold Souper Bowl of Caring collections.

The meals collected will be used to help feed the nearly 46,000 families in need who rely on the Food Bank’s services each week. One in four children is at risk of hunger in Central Texas, and the food collected will help our children continue growing.

"We’re happy to partner with the Capital Area Food Bank, who’s a great agency who services many of the counties we serve so that we can help everyone around Texas," Leticia said.

Though the impact the Souper Bowl of Caring is significant in our community, this is a nationwide event that benefits those struggling with hunger all over the United States. Founded in 1990, the organization has generated more than $115 million in cash and food items for charities across the country.

We cannot thank our friends, H-E-B, Randalls and Central Market enough for all their contributions to help reach the 1.6 million meal goal. They made it easy for everyone to participate by providing pre-packed bags filled with non-perishable items people could pick up and pay for at the register or scan tags that allowed customers to donate $1, $3 or $5.

Collecting meals is only half the work. Now, we need to distribute the food to families’ tables. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, all the items will be distributed to households in need through the Food Bank’s network of nearly 250 Partner Agencies in our 21 county service area. With the record-breaking collected meals coming into our warehouse, now more than ever, we need volunteers to help us sort all the donations. Sign up to volunteer now!
