Hometown Memories Inspires Expanded Hunger Relief in Small Texas Town

Jun23

Father’s day weekend was more exciting than usual in the small Texas town of Mexia. Hometown hero and NFL Pittsburgh Steeler Kelvin Beachum Jr., went into town to raise awareness about an issue close to his home and his heart. When his grandfather was admitted to a nursing home, Beachum’s grandmother lost access to benefits and had limited income to afford a living.

“So many people who struggle with food insecurity choose between eating, paying for rent or paying for other necessities,” Beachum said. “If I can help eliminate one of those difficult choices for the people of my hometown, then we’re one step closer to providing relief.”

Beachum and the Food Bank worked with local officials, two Partner Agencies and supporters to provide area residents with a new way to stretch their grocery bills.  After many months of hard work, we were excited to unveil our new mobile pantry distribution in Mexia and provide much-needed hunger relief to the area.

More than 125 families arrived to meet their hometown hero and receive a 30-pound box of fresh fruits and veggies, pantry staples and frozen meat  Beachum - hosted a raffle and gave away autographed items to show his love for his community.

This is only the beginning of what is shaping up to be an amazing opportunity to deepen our support for this community. With the enthusiasm of committed leaders like Beachum, we know we can end hunger here and throughout Central Texas.
