Four Ways to Volunteer This Summer

Jun20

As you add swimming, cookouts and more to your summer to-do list, keep the Central Texas Food Bank in mind. A few hours of your time can make a huge impact for a family in need.

Why volunteer at the Central Texas Food Bank? Everyone needs food. Unfortunately, one in seven Central Texans and one in five kids don’t know where their next meal will come from. With school out for the summer and higher utility bills, even more families face food insecurity.

With help from volunteers, the Food Bank helps feed nearly 46,000 individuals in need each week. This summer, we need your help to meet the higher need. Here are four ways to can volunteer at the Food Bank to help feed hungry Central Texans:

1. Volunteer in our Kitchen

With school out for the summer break, kids no longer have access to school meals. During the summer, our kitchen staff ramps up production to meet the higher need. Our volunteers help prepare 4,000 kids meals each day to be distributed to our summer meal sites. We have morning and afternoon kitchen volunteers shifts Monday through Friday. Individuals 15 and older can sign up to volunteer in the kitchen here.

2. Volunteer in our Warehouse

Have you ever wondered how donated food gets to families in need? It all happens in our product recovery warehouse. Volunteers inspect, sort, clean and palletize perishable and non-perishable food for distribution. Our warehouse can accommodate up to 120 volunteers. Thanks to the hard work of our warehouse volunteers, thousands of pounds of food leave our warehouse each day. Children eight years and older are welcome volunteer. Sign up for a shift here.

3. Volunteer at a Mobile Food Pantry

Our Mobile Food Pantry sites are a great opportunity to meet and connect with the neighbors we serve. Our volunteers help distribute food, provide cheerful service to clients and assist with set-up and teardown at the distribution site. With 52 sites across Central Texas, you don’t have to travel all the way to the Food Bank’s headquarters to volunteer. Individuals 8 years and older can sign up to volunteer at Mobile Pantry near them here.

4. Volunteer in our Garden

If you prefer fresh air, join us in our garden to help our gardener by planting seeds and seedlings, pulling weeds, shoveling compost, harvesting produce and cultivating the garden beds. The work done in our garden helps provide families in need with fresh, organic produce to stay healthy. You must be 15 years and older to volunteer. Sign up for a shift here.
