Food for Families Breaks Record with 92,000 Meals Raised

Jul05

A large display of brown bags near the entrance at Randalls may seem insignificant, but they’re filled with one of the most basic human needs: food. Each bag has everything for a complete meal with chicken noodle soup, green beans, peanut butter and tuna. For a family in need, the brown bag is exactly what they need.

Thanks to Randalls and CBS Austin’s Food for Families campaign, the brown bags will make their way to families facing hunger in Central Texas. We couldn’t be more grateful for the support from our neighbors. The response has been incredible. This year the food drive helped provide 92,184 meals, breaking last year’s record of 88,658 meals.

We couldn’t have done it without the help of CBS Austin and Telemundo Austin who helped spread the word about hunger with live segments at Randalls and in-studio interviews.

Randalls made it so easy for everyone to help keep our shelves stocked. From June 12 to June 23, shoppers could purchase a pre-packaged bag of food for $5 and place it in a donation barrel inside the store. They also had the option of making a $1, $3 or $5 donation at the register.

Since 2006, CBS Austin and Randalls have joined together to fight hunger during the time of highest need with their Food for Families food drive. We’re amazed to see our community come together to provide nourishing meals to families, especially during the summer when children no longer have access to free or reduced price lunches. We cannot thank everyone enough for all their support to make this an incredible success. Thanks to you, families have a meal on their table.
