Food Bank Volunteers Help Celebrate Veteran's Day

Nov12

Wednesday was Veteran’s Day and one of the Food Bank’s favorite partners, Dell, came down to the Food Bank to lend a hand sorting food while honoring and showing support for our veterans. The Food Bank hosted about 100 Dell volunteers throughout the day. They helped clean, sort and categorize food that will be distributed to the 46,000 people we serve each week. Dell volunteers worked quickly and efficiently and were able to sort enough food to provide 11,938 meals for people in need right here in Central Texas.

Dell’s Vice President of North America and Global 500 Marketing, Bryan Jones, says, “Federal and state government are a huge part of our business at Dell. Coming out to volunteer is just one of the ways we try to give back and support our community.” Jones told us that, in addition to volunteering at the Food Bank, Dell was also hosting a flag ceremony at their Round Rock campus in honor of Veteran’s Day. Many Dell employees are veterans or have family members who are in the military so doing something to honor them seems like a natural fit for the company.

Here at the Food Bank we serve and work alongside veterans every single day. Veterans like Food Bank volunteer, Fred. Fred has been volunteering weekly at the Food Bank for 5 years. Fred served in the 3rd Marine Division during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease his neurologist recommended that he come and volunteer as a way to stay active. On volunteering Fred says, “It’s a help to the community. If you feel like you’re doing nothing, you can come down and help the community a little.”

From all of us at the Capital Area Food Bank; thank you Dell, thank you Fred, and above all else, thank you to all active military and veteran men and women who serve our country every single day.
