Congratulations to our Volunteers of the Quarter!

Volunteers keep the wheels turning at the Food Bank. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, truckloads of food leave our warehouse each day to be distributed to families in need across 21 counties in Central Texas.

We’d like to recognize Ron and Cecilia Herren and RetailMeNot as our Volunteers of the Quarter. Congratulations! Your passion to serve others is unbelievable.

RetailmeNot has gone above and beyond to help those who most need it. Though they’re regular volunteers at the Food Bank, RetailmeNot stepped up to answer our call for support when Hurricane Harvey hit. They packed our warehouse and kitchen with volunteers to help prepare emergency food and supplies to distribute to storm victims.

Their support goes beyond just volunteering. During the holidays, when need is the highest, the Austin-based company gave back to their neighbors by sponsoring our holiday campaign and ensuring families had a full table for the holidays.

We can’t thank RetailmeNot for all they do to serve their community. Thank you!

To help lead volunteers like RetailmeNot, the Food Bank relies on our volunteer leaders like Ron and Cecilia Herren, who are always ready to do their part in the fight against hunger.

The couple has been volunteering for years and have put in hundreds of hours helping other inspect, sort and pack food for families facing hunger.

When Ron worked at the Department of Agriculture, he became familiar with the Food Bank. With extra time on his hands after retiring, he knew he wanted to volunteer at the Food Bank and help his neighbors.

“We don’t realize how many people don’t eat adequately or have enough food and things like that, so it’s very important that we help them with the food that we can so that they can eat better - particularly low-income families,” Ron said.

Ron began volunteering in 2009 after retiring. His wife, Cecilia, joined him soon after. They both volunteer a couple of times a week in our product recovery warehouse.

“It’s something we do together, something we both enjoy and we look forward to it every week. It’s different activity. Sometimes we do frozen, sometimes it’s dry foods and sometimes we do produce,” Ron said.

When the Food Bank is in need of an extra pair of hands, particularly on Saturdays, the couple doesn’t hesitate to give more time to help their neighbors.

Ron and Cecilia are incredible volunteers who are always ready to serve with smiles on their faces. Thank you for everything you have done over the past years to feed families struggling to make ends meet.
