Nutrition Education Program

The Central Texas Food Bank offers a free, bilingual health and wellness classes to organizations that serve low-income or food insecure populations. Our team of registered dietitians and nutrition/wellness experts educate people of all ages on topics such as general nutrition, cooking and gardening using evidence-based curricula following the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Classes focus on helping individuals and families adopt healthy eating patterns, integrate physical activity into their day and ultimately prevent chronic diseases. In addition, most classes include a short cooking demonstration to reinforce the lesson and end our time together with a tasty treat.

Schedule an In-Person or Virtual Class

Organizations interested in hosting a class should fill out an interest form. For more information about classes in your area, contact us via email at choices@centraltexasfoodbank.org.

All of our classes are available FREE of charge and require a minimum of 10 participants.

Class Curriculum

Our team provides education services that are customized to the needs of your organization. The classes are offered in English or Spanish and either as a weekly series or a one-time demonstration.

What you can expect when you schedule a nutrition education class with the Central Texas Food Bank:

  • A free program customized to the needs of your organization with each session ranging from 60 to 90 minutes long
  • The latest, evidence-based information and cover topics the following topics: general nutrition, physical activity, healthy lifestyle choices, food preparation, grocery shopping tips, food safety and fueling your body throughout the life cycle
  • Hands-on activities which allows participants to apply the information to real-life scenarios
  • Incentives at the end of each session (examples: apron, measuring cups/spoons, potholders, pedometers, water bottles, reusable grocery bags, etc.)

Recipes

These recipes created by the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. nutrition educators are low-cost, healthy, easy to prepare and given a “forks-up” by nutrition class participants. Available in Spanish and English.

Cooking skill, not budget is the key to unlocking great food. Everyone has the right to good cooking, regardless of income. The recipes in this collection are lovingly designed and paired with tantalizing photos that show the plethora of exciting and inspiring food that can be prepared for little.
