Souper Bowl of Caring started in 1990 with Spring Valley Presbyterian students generating the simple idea of collecting food and funds for nonprofits serving those in need. The students invited area churches to join them in raising funds for hunger relief. Together, they raised and donated $5,700 to area nonprofits. Since the first SBOC, participation has grown to 13,650 groups consisting of businesses, schools and youth groups. Last year, they generated more than $10 million nationally. Since 2005, the Capital Area Food Bank has encouraged groups to hold Souper Bowl of Caring Food & Fund Drives. During those five years, Central Texans have raised more than $252,000 and more than 1.1 million pounds of food, providing more than 1.7 million meals to our hungry neighbors. "Only through Souper Bowl of Caring do all local media, and H-E-B, Central Texas and Randalls, put competition aside and join together for a common goal: to nourish our hungry neighbors. Our hope is that this incredible act of generosity and leadership will inspire our community to collectively believe that hunger is unacceptable, and act upon it by advocating, donating, and volunteering."
