How the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas distributes food

At the heart of CAFB's mission is the weekly distribution of food and grocery products to our neighbors in need throughout Central Texas.

All distribution efforts are geared toward CAFB Partner Agencies and the individuals and families they serve.

More than 300,000 pounds of high-quality food and grocery products leave CAFB's Distribution Center each week and are dispersed to our network of more than 370 human and social service Partner Agencies.

The Food Bank focuses on distributing nutritional foods like high-quality fruits and vegetables, dairy products and meats and providing Partner Agencies a variety of food and grocery products, including special items like:

* Turkeys during Thanksgiving
* Household items like cleaning products
* Personal care items like baby diapers and soap

Food and grocery product donations

Food and grocery products distributed throughout the CAFB service territory are donated from many sources. The largest source is the food industry.

Nearly every brand you see at the grocery store or in your own cupboard, like General Mills, Kraft and Nabisco, can be found in the Food Bank warehouse. Often, food is donated because of overproduction or inventory control. Other reasons include packaging errors, changes in product formulas, the expiration of coupons or approaching sell-by dates.  These national brands are available to CAFB through the Food Bank's membership in America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network.

Other donors include: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Texas Department of Criminal Justice through the Texas Fresh Approach and numerous community food drives. Still more food is donated by local retail grocery chains like H-E-B and Randalls, food wholesalers such as Whole Foods Southwest Distribution Center and local food companies like Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods.
