Perishable Food Rescue
Quality fruits, vegetables and meat are essential to a balanced diet but can be expensive and difficult for many food assistance programs to provide on a regular basis. The Meat and Perishable Food Rescue Program is an important component of the Food Bank's food resource development effort, as it collects fresh foods from area grocers and wholesalers and distributes them to the community.

Funding is needed to operate refrigerated trucks and to pay utility costs for enormous freezers and coolers. Interested in sponsoring Perishable Food Rescue? Get started by filling out a sponsorship request form. |
The Food Bank is equipped to handle and store a large amount of perishable items and can distribute it quickly to those in need. This efficiency benefits both recipient agencies and food donors, and it encourages donors' participation.

The Food Bank's transportation and warehouse staff members follow strict food handling guidelines to ensure that the food safely reaches the people who need it most. The Food Bank's partner agencies also receive extensive training on proper food handling procedures throughout the year.
In 2006, the Capital Area Food Bank rescued more than 800,000 pounds of food through the Meat and Perishable Food Rescue Program.
Donations from the food industry are needed.
