CAFB Awarded $10.6 Million Federal Reimbursement Grant to Address Child Hunger, Child Obesity
New Program to Help Capital Area Food Bank Provide Family Food Boxes This Summer


Austin, TX —

WHAT:
Summer Family Nutrition Program

Capital Area Food Bank will provide two 25-pound nutritious Family Food Boxes per month, June to September, to eligible families

WHO:

  • Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) and Partner Agencies in our 21-county service area
  • CAFB estimates 114,000 Central Texas families are eligible for this program
  • $10.6 million grant funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)
  • Eligible families are: Households with legal guardianship over at least one child under 18 years of age and with an annual household income equal to or less than 185 percent of the federal poverty guideline; families whose children received free- or reduced-price lunch; or who receive WIC, SNAP (food stamps) and other federal programs
  • CAFB will prescreen to determine eligibility and distribute Family Food Boxes on-site Tuesday through Saturday, 12-6 p.m.

  • Families will receive monthly Family Food Boxes containing a nutritional balance of pantry staples such as cereal, beans, rice and canned vegetables; nutrition education materials and resources for additional assistance

WHY:

  • 41 percent of CAFB clients are children
  • Through this summer program, the Food Bank will fill the gap and help families with children who typically eat meals at school
  • To alleviate both child hunger and child obesity for Central Texas families with children at risk of hunger
  • Media coverage needed to spread the word to the estimated 114,000 families eligible for this new Food Bank program

Prescreening begins Thursday, June 24; distribution is June 29 – September 30, 2010
