Award Winning Chef David Bull Cooking Up Lunch with Food Bank Austin, TX — Austin, Texas - As the executive chef of Congress and Second Bar + Kitchen restaurants, a Food & Wine’s Best New Chef award winner, a James Beard award nominee and a 2006 Food Network’s Iron Chef America contender, Chef David Bull is a busy man. This Friday, June 24th Chef Bull will demonstrate, firsthand, the power of food and a giving philosophy by preparing lunch for 80 children as part of the Capital Area Food Bank’s (CAFB) kick off for the Summer Food Service Program. Because one in four Texas children are now at risk of going hungry, the program fills the lunch gap created during the summer for thousands of kids who would normally receive reduced or free school lunches throughout the school year. “As a father and chef, it is unacceptable that children go hungry in our country today,” says Chef Bull. “It’s hard for kids who go hungry to concentrate, develop and learn. This program steps in to feed children all summer long, and I’m excited the Food Bank offered me the opportunity to cook a tasty and nutritious lunch for them.” Chef Bull will be preparing and cooking lunch at one of the Food Bank’s partners and summer food sites in south Austin: the nonprofit campus of El Buen Samaritano. And a special team of servers will step in and help serve the lunch including Mayor Pro Tem, Mike Martinez, Texas Dept of Agriculture’s Asst. Commissioner for Food and Nutrition, Angela Olige and CAFB President & CEO Hank Perret. CAFB will operate the federally funded program from thirty sites around town this year and expects to serve 40,000 lunches over the course of the summer. There’s also a little twist to the lunch—one that Chef Bull will summon his Iron Chef America experience to solve. He can only spend $3 per child for ingredients—approximately the same amount the Food Bank is reimbursed by The Texas Department of Agriculture for each meal—and the lunches must still meet the nutritional guidelines for the program. Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez stated “Many children rely on school meals to keep them healthy and well-fed, and I hope that moving forward we can form more collaborations like this one to serve the children in the community that go without meals during the summer. I applaud Capital Area Food Bank and El Buen Samaritano for continuing to feed our children through the summer months. These free meals help them continue to grow and develop so they will be ready for the start of school.”
The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas (CAFB) is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in ending hunger. Since 1982, CAFB in collaboration with more than 355 partner agencies has been helping Central Texans in need providing healthy food, nutritional program assistance and education, so they can make better choices at mealtime. In the past 12 months, CAFB distributed more than 25 million pounds of food to 300,000 Central Texans in its 21 county service territory.
