SNAP (FOOD STAMP) OUTREACH

In 2008, the Federal Food Stamp Program changed its name to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

SNAP is a key way to address the nutritional needs of low-income families. However, many barriers to participation remain. CAFB helps remove some of those barriers.

The SNAP Outreach Program is funded in part through a grant from the Health and Human Services Commission.

Could I be eligible?

The table below explains gross and net income limits for SNAP benefits and the most SNAP benefits you can get if you have no income.  If your household has a person who is 60 or older or disabled, only the net income limit must be met.  As your income goes up, your SNAP benefits go down.  You can also use the Texas Health and Human Services SNAP Benefits Estimator to help you decide if you should apply for SNAP.

Your Rights

Everyone applying for SNAP has the right to:

  • Receive an application when you ask for it.
  • Turn in your application the same day you receive it.
  • Receive your SNAP benefits (or be notified that you are not eligible for the program) within 30 days after you turn in your application.
  • Receive SNAP benefits within a few days if you are eligible and have little or no money.
  • Have a fair hearing if you disagree with any action taken on your case.

Emergency SNAP Benefits

Emergency SNAP benefits are also known as expedited SNAP because the benefits are given faster to those in an emergency situation, such as:

  • A family with resources worth $100 or less, and monthly income less than $150.
  • A family with resources and monthly income that are less than the most recent monthly expenses for rent/mortgage and utilities.
  • A family that includes a migrant or seasonal farm worker who has $100 or less in resources and very little income.

To apply for emergency SNAP, visit a HHSC benefits office or call 2-1-1.
