Quality fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meat are essential to a balanced diet but can be expensive and difficult for food assistance programs to provide on a regular basis. To fill that gap, the Central Texas Food Rescue program collects fresh foods from area grocers and wholesalers and distributes them throughout our 21-county Central Texas service area.
CAFB can handle and store a large amount of perishable food and distributes it quickly to those in need. This efficiency benefits Partner Agencies and food donors, and it encourages donors’ participation.
CAFB’s transportation and warehouse staff members follow strict food handling guidelines to ensure that the food safely reaches the people who need it. CAFB Partner Agencies also receive extensive training on proper food handling procedures. In 2009, Central Texas Food Rescue brought in 3.3 million pounds of food, up from 1.6 million in 2008. More than a quarter of the food was nutritious protein.
Funding is needed to operate refrigerated trucks and to pay utility costs for enormous freezers and coolers. Learn more about food industry donations.
